background / biography

Formed in 2002, Cutback is a Surf Band comprised of four friends who have surfed and played music together on and off for over 30 years. Their act is a musical journey that showcases the history of surfing and the influence of surf culture around the globe. From covers of influential surf songs, past and present, to the bands original tunes, their instrumental music is woven together with a narrative inspired by Bruce Brown’s pivotal classic Endless Summer.

Cutback’s sound is new surf music with classic surf roots. Starting their musical career in 1969 in Frank’s garage. The original band consisted of all current members- Richard LaVoir, Nicky Ravine, Frank Ferraro & Joe DiDonna with one difference- Joe sang Lead Vocals. After High School the band members moved on with Frank relocating to NY & joining a popular local hard rock band named “Edilon.” Richard & Nicky remained in South Florida and formed “Blaze” a party band, which played at local High School dances, clubs, and surf parties and for the Ft. Lauderdale spring break crowd. Joe soon married and got a job with the phone company becoming a “Dashboard Drummer” between assignments.

While early musical influences range from The Trashmen & The Troggs to Grand Funk Railroad & Deep Purple, Surf music influences are the usual suspects- Dick Dale, The Ventures, Paul Johnson, Latika & The Cosmonauts, Gary Hoey & Davie Allan. More recent musical influences are found in the emergence of the retro Polynesian Pop movement blending Exotica with Big Daddy Roth and the newer surf sounds of Hawaiian bands like Hapa, The Kauai Crater Boys & IZ.
